I chose to be anonymous because I do not want to court the wrath of my employers. Suffice to say, journalists in Nigeria suffer too much for the miserly pay they receive.
Journalists in the print media that I work for are perceived to be the highest earners in the profession in Nigeria, but when converted, as a mid-level career journalist and an Assistant Editor with 20 years’ active journalism practice, I earn just about $1,500 per month, and health coverage of approximately $93.75 cents per annum. My employers gave me a car loan of $3,906.25, with 10% compound interest payable in five years. Yet, when politicians look at our humble statuses and extend monetary gifts to us, our employers balk at it.
I have met foreign journalists, especially Africans, but the common lament is that nobody feels that his pay corresponds with his status, academic qualification, professional experiences, workload and risk of assassination that journalists now face, especially in Africa.
I don’t advise any young person who hopes for a rosy future to plunge into a profession that has become a nightmare—financially speaking—to the practitioners.
